Battlefield 3: Holy @#$%

It was a simpler time back in the late 70s, when I would sit next to my dad on our bright-yellow-corduroy couch and play video games on our state of the art Intellivision game console. We were the envy of the neighborhood. In between fierce dogfights and thrilling touchdowns, he would say to me, “you know, someday video games will look so lifelike that you won’t be able to tell them apart from the real world.” Being that I was only 5 years old and staring at a screen full of rectangles desperately trying to pass themselves off as people, airplanes, monsters… anything but rectangles, I found this concept a little hard to comprehend.

Today, it just got a lot easier.

Philosophy – Guide to Happiness

Check out this documentary series by Alain de Botton, based on his book The Consolations of Philosophy. In this series, Botton examines the lives of six famous philosophers and shows us how their philosophies on subjects such as self-confidence, happiness, anger, self-esteem, love, and hardship still hold true today. Two thumbs up!

Socrates on Self-Confidence

Epicurus on Happiness

Seneca on Anger

Montaigne on Self-Esteem

Schopenhauer on Love

Nietzsche on Hardship

The Buddha

I watched this last night on Netflix. If anyone is even a bit curious about The Buddha (and Buddhism), I would point them to this documentary first. It’s a great place to start.

Watch the full episode. See more The Buddha.

“A human being is part of the whole, called by us ‘Universe’; a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest–a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and affection for a few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole nature in its beauty. Nobody is able to achieve this completely but striving for such achievement is, in itself, a part of the liberation and a foundation for inner security.”
–Albert Einstein
